The collection consists of letters, documents, manuscript diaries, a few maps and photographs, and ephemera related to the life and military career of Charles Stewart Farnsworth. Subject matter includes military affairs and administration (as seen in orders, bulletins, communications, etc., chiefly during World War I); information about Montana, Alaska, and Farnsworth's other posts; the city of Altadena, California (1927-1951); the Farnsworth family. Although there are various correspondents in the collection, the most prominent is his second wife, Helen Bosard Farnsworth, who is represented in the collection by 297 pieces (including both correspondence and diaries).

Charles Stewart Farnsworth (1862-1955) was born on a farm in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and raised in Clarion, Pennsylvania. Upon graduating from West Point in 1887, he married Laura Galey, of Clarion, and embarked on a military career. His son Robert was born at Fort Shaw, Montana, in 1888; his wife died there two years later. From 1893 to 1897 he was assigned to teach military science and tactics at the University of North Dakota.
